Junior Sornoza was one of the stars of the night in the latest round of matches in the Copa Libertadores, which produced some late dramas.
Sornoza was in superb form as Independiente del Valle returned to winning ways in style against Liverpool early Wednesday.
He put on a show, scoring the opener before he assisted the winner in the second half as Independiente sealed an easy 2-0 win at home.
The win was the first of the season for Del Valle in the group stage of the South American elite club championship.
Sornoza show for Independiente
In what was a dominant display of authority, the home side dominated their visitors from Uruguay, with the 29-year-old at the centre of the show.
Sornoza was at his absolute best in the 81 minutes he lasted before he was subbed off following a brilliant day’s work as he has now scored in a record for editions of the Copa Libertadores.
He created the most chances (seven), made the most key passes (six), completed seven of eight long balls attempted and played 14 passes into the final third.
While Independiente dominated and created enough chances in the game, they were less effective in the final third as they missed most of the chances.
However, it was no coincidence that it was their midfielder Sornoza who broke the deadlock just before the half-hour mark to give them the lead and was involved again in the second just after the hour mark to seal their first win of the season in the Libertadores.
Boca Juniors see off Deportivo
Elsewhere, it was a night of emotions at the Estadio Alberto Jose Armando where Argentine giants Boca Juniors left it late to see off Deportivo Pereira.
Boca Juniors defeated Deportivo Pereira 2-1 in the most dramatic late show which saw all three goals scored in the final 14 minutes while Pereira had a man sent off in the 90th minute.
Alan Varela was the hero for Juniors following his stoppage-time winner to give the club its first win of the season.
In what was a dramatic game between the two, the fans had to wait until the 76th minute for the breakthrough and it was the visitors who took a shock lead through Jimer Fory.
However, Boca equalised in the 89th minute via Luis Advincula before a dramatic winner in the ninth minute of added time from Varela sealed the deal for Juniors.
