Kenya Cup: Kabras Sugar survive Oilers scare to keep unbeaten streak alive as Nondies clobber SC Pirates
Kabras RFC extended their remarkable unbeaten run in the Kenya Cup to 38 matches after edging out Menengai Oilers 20-14 in a tightly contested clash at Nakuru ASK Grounds.
Despite missing out on a bonus point for the second consecutive weekend, Kabras once again asserted their dominance over Oilers, stretching their winning streak against them to eight matches since Oilers’ promotion to the top tier.
Kabras RFC also preserved their 100% win record in Nakuru City since their promotion to the Kenya Cup in 2014.
Menengai Oilers started the match on the front foot, taking an early 5-0 lead courtesy of playmaker Samuel Mwaura’s try. Timothy Omela then extended the hosts' advantage to 8-0 with a well-taken penalty.
However, Kabras fought back as Ntabeni Dukisa slotted a penalty, narrowing the gap to 8-3. The defending champions then took the lead for the first time when Brian Tanga capitalized on a quick penalty to dive over for a try, with Dukisa converting to make it 10-8 in Kabras’ favor.
The lead was short-lived as Omela struck another penalty, restoring Oilers' advantage at 11-10. The Nakuru-based side continued to capitalize on their territory, with Omela adding another three points to extend the lead to 14-10.
Just before halftime, Kabras responded with a penalty to reduce the deficit to 14-13.
The second half saw a fiercely contested battle, with Oilers frustrating Kabras’ attack. However, Dukisa turned the game on its head with a decisive try, sealing the hard-fought 20-14 victory.
The win places Kabras at the top with 48 points ahead of their high-stakes final regular-season clash against KCB.
Nakuru overcome Mwamba in five-try thriller
Nakuru RFC registered their third consecutive win, edging Mwamba 32-27 in a pulsating contest at Nakuru Athletics Club.
Nakuru’s Fredrick Odongo kicked off the scoring with a penalty just two minutes into the match. Mwamba responded in the 16th minute through Charles Kuka’s drop goal, leveling the score at 3-3.
Philip Okeyo then bagged a quickfire brace for Nakuru, both converted by Odongo. Mwamba responded with a converted try through Kuka, making it 17-10 at halftime.
Mwamba came out strong after the break, with Brian and Roxy Suchi scoring tries, the latter successfully converted by Ojiambo, giving them the lead at 22-17.
However, Nakuru’s Okeyo was in top form, completing his hat-trick, with Odongo adding the extras to swing the score to 25-22. Both teams added points in a frantic final stretch, but Nakuru RFC held firm to secure a thrilling 32-27 victory.
The win sees Nakuru rise to 14 points, while Mwamba remain on 12 points.
