Just show it more consistently — Werder Bremen icon eager for Boniface to redeem himself
Former Werder Bremen star Martin Harnik has urged Nigerian striker Victor Boniface to step up and deliver more consistently as the club heads into a crucial phase of the season.
With the Nordderby against Hamburger SV approaching, Harnik believes Boniface’s improvement could significantly boost Werder’s ambitions.

Speaking to DeichStube, Harnik was clear about what Werder need from their frontline, stressing that regular goalscoring could transform the team’s prospects.
“It is obvious that a striker who scores reliably would help enormously to get even higher in the table. Boniface and Topp have absolute quality, they just have to show it more consistently,” he said.
The former Austria international emphasised that while Werder possess the right attacking tools, unlocking their potential remains the key to success in decisive moments.
Harnik added, “Werder have good strikers, but both the players and the coaching staff have to find ways to finally unleash their full potential.”
His comments further reflect the growing expectation on Boniface, who is yet to score this season after joining from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer.
Boniface seeks breakthrough ahead of the Nordderby
Despite early struggles with form and fitness, Boniface has still earned a place in Eric Chelle’s 54-man provisional squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
His inclusion serves as a reminder of the talent Harnik referenced, but Werder now urgently need that quality to translate into Bundesliga performances.
Sunday’s clash against Hamburg presents the perfect chance for the Nigerian striker to find his first goal of the season and answer his critics.
With Werder pushing to climb the league table, every attacking moment will matter, and Boniface, who is still adapting to his new surroundings, will be under the spotlight yet again.
