Costa, 53, suffered a fatal cardiac arrest at the club's training centre on Tuesday. Despite being rushed to hospital, he could not be saved.

A warrior on and off the pitch

A symbol of leadership and resilience, Costa was serving as Porto’s Director of Professional Football in his second season back at the club he served so loyally during his decorated career.

Jorge Costa’s playing career was synonymous with FC Porto. Nicknamed "Bicho" (Animal) for his aggressive and unyielding style of play, he made 383 appearances for the club and earned 50 caps for Portugal.

Known for his commanding presence at centre-back, Costa led Porto to UEFA Cup glory in 2003 and to their iconic Champions League triumph in 2004 under José Mourinho.

He was one of just six players to win five consecutive Primeira Liga titles with Porto and helped Portugal reach the Euro 2000 semi-finals.

A legacy etched in Portuguese football

Costa retired as one of the most respected figures in Portuguese football. In April 2024, he returned to Porto in a leadership role under new club president André Villas-Boas.

His passing has prompted heartfelt tributes from UEFA, the Portuguese Football Federation, and Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, who called him “an example of dedication and commitment.”

Porto’s 2004 Champions League winning coach, Jose Mourinho, paid tribute to him, saying: “I know what you would say now if you could, ‘mister stop crying, tomorrow you have a match and your boys need you ready and strong’. I promise you Bicho, I am going to do it. RIP, because your legacy stay[s] with us.”

UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin described Costa as “a true warrior who inspired generations.” FC Porto declared: “You will never be forgotten, Captain.” His legacy as a player, leader, and symbol of Portismo will endure for generations.
