Jonah Ayunga Reflects on Frustrating Equatorial Guinea Loss and Lessons Ahead of Harambee Stars Clash with Senegal
Jonah Ayunga has discussed what went wrong in Harambee Stars' 1-0 loss to Equatorial Guinea in their friendly match played on Friday, November 14, at the Emir Complex Stadium in Antalya, Turkey.
Despite dominating the opening 15 minutes, Harambee Stars conceded a penalty just before half-time after a foul on Josete Miranda. The 27-year-old Equatorial Guinea forward calmly converted from the spot, giving Equatorial Guinea a 1-0 lead.
Kenya had several chances to equalise, including Jonah Ayunga’s close-range shot in the 13th minute, and an offside goal in the 18th. Despite their dominance, the Stars could not break through the opposition’s defence.
Jonah Ayunga: What Harambee Stars Need to Work on Ahead of Senegal Clash
The St. Mirren winger expressed his disappointment over the narrow defeat to Equatorial Guinea, noting that the team’s loss came from a spot-kick whose legitimacy he was unsure of, as he had not seen a replay.
Jonah Ayunga reflected that the squad performed solidly at the back, limiting the opposition to very few opportunities, with the penalty being the only significant threat they faced.
He also acknowledged his own missed chances during the match, suggesting that the team could have turned the game around if key opportunities had been converted.
Jonah Ayunga emphasised that while the defensive display was commendable, the result was frustrating and highlighted areas where the team needed to be more clinical in front of goal.
“I’m frustrated with the result, obviously losing 1-0 to a penalty, I’m not sure if it was a penalty because we haven’t seen it back. It looked 50/50 at the time,” Jonah Ayunga said after the match.
“I think as a team, defensively, we were quite good, and I think they had a couple of shots, but other than that, the only real chance they had was obviously the penalty.”
Looking ahead to their upcoming encounter with Senegal, he added that the first half had been particularly promising, with the team creating numerous opportunities and following a clear game plan.
Jonah Ayunga noted that the strategy of staying compact defensively and transitioning quickly upon regaining possession worked well, but finishing in front of the goal remained an issue.
Ayunga emphasised that it would be up to the forwards and midfielders to make the most of the chances they create, expressing hope that the positives from the Equatorial Guinea match could be carried into their next fixture to achieve better results.
“For us, especially in the first half, we needed to make sure that we took the chances and got good opportunities; maybe in the last part, the finish was just not right,” he added.
“We made a lot of chances, we had a good game plan, to sit deep and then when we recovered the ball, we made good transitions quickly, which we did. The game plan in the first half worked, so it’s just down to us forwards and midfielders to take the chances.”
Harambee Stars face off against Sadio Mane’s Senegal on Tuesday, November 18 at 18:00 at the Mardan Stadium.
