Jesse Lingard has spoken candidly about his frustration with the way his Manchester United career came to an end, admitting he felt let down by the club after returning from a sensational loan spell at West Ham United.
Now a free agent following the conclusion of his contract with FC Seoul, Lingard believed his exceptional form during the second half of the 2020–21 Premier League season merited a far more prominent role at Old Trafford.
The midfielder joined West Ham on loan in January 2021 and quickly became one of the league’s standout performers.
In just 16 appearances, Lingard scored nine goals and provided five assists, playing a key role in the Hammers’ push for European qualification.
However, that momentum failed to carry over upon his return to Manchester United.
Opportunities proved scarce, with Lingard largely restricted to brief substitute appearances before his contract expired, bringing an end to his long association with the club he joined as a youngster.
What Lingard said
Speaking to Sky Sports, Lingard did not hide his disappointment.
He said, “After the West Ham loan, I felt I deserved to play. I was probably one of the best players in the league at the time.”
He added, “As a player, you want to play every game. Getting to play a little here and a little there is difficult.”
Lingard also addressed criticism surrounding his personality and off-field image.
“I like to be a happy person and put smiles on people’s faces. But when it’s time to work, I work,” he explained.
