It happened for 90 minutes — Simeone explains why he lost it and got sent off against Liverpool
Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone explained why he went ballistic after Virgil Van Dijk scored the late winner to help Liverpool secure maximum points in their opening Champions League game.
What happened
Marcos Llorente scored on either side of the halftime break to help the Rojiblancos restore parity after Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah’s goals gave the Reds an early lead.
Liverpool pushed for the winner at Anfield late in the game and got it. After Van Dijk's header gave the Reds the would-be winning goal, the camera panned away from the goal celebration towards a ruckus on the sideline involving Simeone.
The Argentine coach appeared to be gesturing towards Liverpool fans in the stands and had to be pulled away. He was then sent off by the referee.
What Simone said
“There has been insults the whole game, but, well, the one who has to be calm is me and endure everything, insults, gestures; you don't know what 90 minutes of insulted without stopping is,” he said, per Eurofoot. ‘I insult you the whole game from behind, and you can't say anything because I'm the coach; it happens.
“The referee? He told me that he understood me, but hopefully Liverpool can improve it, and if they identify who did that, it will have its consequences.”
