Chiefs have been struggling in the last 10 years with even qualification to continental competitions a problem and hit an all-time low in the last two seasons when they did not make the top eight.

Since winning the league title in 2015, the Glamour Boys waited 10 years for their next trophy, a Nedbank Cup win in May this year, which earned them a place in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Still, they are inconsistent this term even with their improved table standings with frustration among fans not ending.

However, according to their former coach Farouk Khan, the South African giants’ problems run deep and he does not think it is a coaching issue but rather a lack of proper direction and quality within the squad.

What Really Ails Kaizer Chiefs?

“The issues that Chiefs are facing are systemic, it is not technical,” Khan said on SoccerBeat as per Afrik-Foot.

“It does not matter if you bring Pep Guardiola or [Jose] Mourinho tomorrow. There are certain underlying things that Chiefs need to sort out.

“One of them being the fact that their playing philosophy, the playing style. The culture of the team. If you look back decades ago, Chiefs always had superstars, who is the superstar at Chiefs at this moment in time?”

“You don’t have this quality of players that you had in the past that made Chiefs what it was, an institution.”

Many Coaching Changes Not Helping

With Chiefs going through many coaching changes in the last decade and facing the possibility of another man in the dugout at the end of this season, Khan feels this is also not helping their course.

“It is systemic in many ways and I also think the chronic coaching instability has been an ongoing process. Since 2015, they have had 10 coaches,” he added.

“Changing the coach and not changing the situation, now we are looking at the symptoms rather than looking at the causes. What are the causes?”

Chiefs ended the year in fourth position with 24 points from 13 matches, four behind leaders Orlando Pirates, but would have been top of the table had they not thrown away points easily with many draws to lower or midtable sides.

In the Confederation Cup, their began their group stage campaign with a loss and draw against Egyptian sides Al Masry and Zamalek respectively.
