'I'm glad I was there' — Arsenal star Bukayo Saka admits career mistake from last season
Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka has opened up about a decision he now admits might have been a mistake rushing his recovery from a hamstring injury just to face Real Madrid in last season’s Champions League.
Although the 23-year-old says the experience was unforgettable, he now recognises the risk it posed to his long-term fitness.
Saka reveals emotional return from injury
Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, Saka recalled the moment he made up his mind to face the Spanish giants no matter what. “I remember when I got injured, a few weeks after we were watching the Champions League draw,” he said. “I saw that if we beat PSV we were going to get Real Madrid.
“I just told the physio straight away: ‘That’s my target. Whatever happens, I need to be ready for that game.’ We were just working towards that constantly.
“So when the day arrived and I was able to start that game, I wouldn’t say I was in the best shape fitness-wise, but it didn’t matter – because mentally I was,” he explained. “I’m glad I was there because it was a very special night at the Emirates.”
Saka went on to make a key contribution in that tie, scoring Arsenal’s opening goal in the return leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Arsenal hope Saka learns from the past
While Saka’s determination was widely praised at the time, the aftermath of that decision has been far from ideal.
The Arsenal star has since suffered another hamstring injury at the start of this season, prompting fresh concerns about his workload and recovery management.
Those close to the club believe Saka’s tireless commitment and eagerness to play through pain have made him more vulnerable to recurring setbacks.
With Arsenal pushing for major honours again this season, fans and staff alike will hope he can balance his hunger to perform with a more cautious approach to fitness.
