Iheanacho honored to captain Super Eagles to a disappointing draw against Lesotho
The Super Eagles of Nigeria started their campaign to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday, November 16, 2023.
At the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, the Super Eagles World Cup qualification opener was against the Crocodiles of Lesotho
The Super Eagles were not effective to start the game as the first half ended in a goalless draw.
Against the run of play, Tshwarelo Bereng located Motlomelo Mkhwanazi from a corner kick in the 56th minute to put Lesotho in front.
Kelechi Iheanacho's corner kick was headed in by Semi Ajayi for the Super Eagles equalizer.
The game ended in a draw as the Super Eagles playing in the rain were unable to find a breakthrough against a stubborn Lesotho team.
Iheanacho reacts as Super Eagles Struggle against Lesotho
Iheanacho captained the team in the absence of Ahmed Musa, William Troost-Ekong and Wilfred Ndidi.
He took to social media to celebrate captaining the team to a draw.
Iheanacho said, "Huge honour to captain the boys yesterday
"I know this was a game we have to win But we didn’t. We got a point from it.
"Hopefully we will do a lot more in the next game and get 3 points 🦅🙏🏾>'
The Super Eagles have branded Let's Do It Again ahead of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d'Ivoire but were unable to start their World Campaign with a win.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and now continue their quest for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, Canada, and the United States of America (USA) against Zimbabwe on Sunday, November 19, 2023.
