'I wanted to be part of it' - Mbuemo on why he joined 'good project' at Man Utd
Bryan Mbeumo has explained why he joined Manchester United from Brentford.
The 25-year-old Cameroonian international moved from Brentford to Old Trafford for £71 million.
What Mbeumo said
Despite strong interest from Spurs and alleged efforts by Brentford to influence Mbeumo, and accusations of a lowball offer from United, the player from Avallon remained committed to his desired move.
"Of course, I spoke to other managers. But the Manchester United project was very good for me. I wanted to be part of it," he said while speaking from the luxurious Waldorf Astoria in Chicago.
In the end, a £65m fee with £6m in add-ons was agreed, and Mbeumo got his wish, to play for a club he supported as a child, under a manager in Ruben Amorim whose vision he instantly aligned with.
Mbeumo remained unshaken, taking calls from teammate Andre Onana urging him to join the Manchester revolution.
He admitted that he still struggles to play the piano in front of a small group of friends.
"I trust my people. The transfer window can be long, it can be short, so you have to be patient. I was on holiday, mentally and physically resting. If it was going to happen, it was going to happen.
"Even if I play in front of a couple of friends, I’m like, ‘Guys, this is hard for me. It’s just something for me. It helps me relax and take time for myself. It’s not connected to football," he said.
Across the past three Premier League seasons, only Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah, Ollie Watkins, and Alexander Isak have outscored Mbeumo. He will now be utilised as a No.10 in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation when the season starts.
