What Rooney said

“'Danny, he's great to play alongside and if I'm being completely honest, I'd probably still like to see him here playing for Manchester United,” Rooney said, per the Daily Mail.

“He scored goals throughout his career, had injuries in early part of his career, but seems to have got over them and he's having a fantastic season.”

Welbeck came up through the ranks at Manchester United. He spent seven seasons as a senior team squad member. He scored 29 goals.

He went on to play for Arsenal, and he's not at Brighton, where he is thriving. He has seven goals and four assists in the Premier League, more than Manchester United's two strikers, Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund combined.

Welbeck was linked with a sensational return to Manchester United last winter, but the deal did not materialise. Given the club's financial situation and the necessity for a striker, Welbeck could prove a safe low-cost option.
