Super Eagles defender Bright Osayi-Samuel has revealed that he intends to dedicate his time to developing grassroots football in Nigeria when he retires from playing professionally.
While Osayi-Samuel was born in Nigeria, he was raised in England and was eligible to play for the Three Lions beforeopting for the Super Eagles.
A trip to his state of origin, Edo, last year has strengthened his bond with his country, and he has since begun an initiative to help more locals pursue a professional football career.
What Osayi-Samuel said
The Birmingham City defender had a recent interview with Oma Akatugba, in which he discussed a myriad of topics, including his decision to represent the Super Eagles and his experience playing under Jose Mourinho at Fenerbahce.
While retirement seems further away for the 28-year-old, he has already begun making plans, and in the interview, he detailed his plans to grow grassroots football.“I think since last year, going back to Nigeria, going back to my state [Edo], it made me realise there are lots of people who want to be footballers but don't have the opportunity," he said.
“So, I think after football [when I retire], I'd love to go back and help as much as I can. With this tournament that I've started, it's been two years now. I want to keep going every year, make it bigger and take some scouts with me as well.
“To be fair, it's good now because even in the camp [Super Eagles camp in Morocco], Frank Onyeka asked me about the tournament, and he also wants to join in.
“We're thinking of doing it together, and that's exactly what I want. We want to get as many players to get involved, even my club, Birmingham City.
“I'm speaking to see if we can have a collab next summer to send some people over there and give out some shirts and kits. Those are the type of things I want to do when I finish football. When I have to give back, I'll do my absolute best.”
