The Nigerian international, a recent summer acquisition for the Sky Blues, was introduced in the second half at the Emirates Stadium, coming on for Ellis Simms as Coventry sought a way back into the match.

Despite the limited time on the field, Awoniyi made a positive impression, demonstrating threatening movement and a strong presence in the attacking third during his cameo.

Speaking to the club's media team after the match, Lampard revealed that Awoniyi's playing time was intentionally managed due to his lack of match fitness since the beginning of pre-season.

The Coventry boss explained that the striker had primarily participated in light training over the previous ten days, making a 20- to 25-minute introduction feel like the appropriate course of action.

"They [the new players] need some time. Taiwo came on for 20 or 25 minutes," Lampard stated. "It felt right because in the last ten days his legs have not been full of match minutes, just bits of training."

Lampard also commended the former Union Berlin forward for the promising signs he displayed, noting that he showed positive fundamental qualities despite his restricted preparation. "But, I thought he showed some basic stuff for us," he added.

Awoniyi will be keen to build up his fitness and secure a regular starting role as he aims to help the newly promoted side secure their Premier League status this season.
