Brentford's latest move causes confusion over Super Eagles star's future
Brentford have raised fresh questions over Benjamin Fredrick’s immediate future after confirming their first-team squad numbers for the 2026-27 season.
Despite promoting the Super Eagles defender to the senior squad and handing him a new four-year contract, the decision to give him the No. 48 shirt has left his place in the first-team plans unclear.
Fredrick handed new Brentford squad number
Brentford have confirmed that Fredrick has been promoted to the first team following the signing of a new four-year contract last month, with the club also holding an option to extend his deal until the 2030-31 season.
The Nigerian defender will wear No. 48 during the upcoming campaign, having previously used No. 43 and No. 44 in his earlier seasons at the club. However, the choice of number is intriguing because several more traditional first-team numbers, including 15, 16, 25 and 26, remain available.

Fredrick has yet to make his senior debut for Brentford despite being involved around the first team. The 21-year-old has been named in six matchday squads, including Premier League fixtures against Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Aston Villa and Bournemouth.
He was also an unused substitute in FA Cup matches against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The latest squad announcement therefore provides evidence of his promotion but does little to clarify whether he will remain with the first team throughout the season.
Loan spell and injury hamper Fredrick's progress
Fredrick's development has been affected by a lack of first-team opportunities and an injury setback. The Simoiben Football Academy product spent the 2025-26 campaign on loan at Belgian club FC Dender, where he made 15 appearances across all competitions.
His season was disrupted by a knee injury suffered after returning from international duty with Nigeria in November, limiting his involvement and preventing him from building consistent momentum. Now back at Brentford, the defender has another opportunity to establish himself.
Fredrick's new contract suggests the Bees continue to value his long-term potential, while his promotion indicates that he remains part of their plans. However, the No. 48 shirt and the availability of several lower squad numbers could fuel speculation over whether another loan move is possible.
For the Super Eagles, regular club football will also be crucial as Fredrick looks to strengthen his position within Nigeria's senior setup.
