Arsenal’s depth problem

With Manchester City’s evident struggles this season, 2024/25 was meant to be Arsenal’s year to eventually lift the Premier League title after consecutive second-place finishes.

However, they lost the league title to Liverpool and risked finishing outside the top two before beating Newcastle at the Emirates earlier, which sealed a third consecutive second-place finish.

One of the main reasons, as Arteta himself has alluded to, for their failures this season was an injury crisis that claimed major players like Gabriel Maghalaes, Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz, Ricardo Calafiori, Mikel Merino, and others at different key points of the season.

The Gunners' leadership have been criticised for failing to address this obvious depth problem last summer, or at least during the winter transfer window. Hence, in his statement, Kroenke said that they know what they have to do and promised adequate investment.

What Kroenke said

“Mikel and his coaching staff, as well as the players, faced some challenges throughout the season and I want to give credit to the way they managed in these circumstances. It’s in these moments you learn the most,” he said, per the club’s website.

“We plan to invest to get behind winning and doing better next season. We’re delighted we have our sporting director, Andrea, who will play an important role in this. He is part of a unified and strong team, supported by the board, who are crystal clear on exactly what we need to do and the way in which we want to do it. The right way. The Arsenal way.”
