The referee immediately disallowed the goal and issued the former Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona forward his second yellow, much to the dismay of the home supporters.

Later in the game, Botafogo capitalised on their one-man advantage, with Artur Victor Guimaraes snatching a late winner for the visitors.

Neymar's international future also remains uncertain after being omitted from Carlo Ancelotti's first Brazil squad.

The red card suspension will further delay his opportunity to impress the new national team manager.
