Gor Mahia Administrator Reveals Crucial Factor That Will Make Charles Akonnor's Charges Dominant
Gor Mahia’s administrative secretary Ronald Ngala has lifted the lid on what he believes is the turning point behind the club’s resurgent form under new head coach Charles Akonnor.
Ngala revealed that Akonnor—appointed just before the start of the season—finally has a full grasp of his squad after a challenging start, and that stability will be the key to Gor Mahia’s dominance going forward.
“The coach joined us when most of our players were turning out for Harambee Stars, hence he could not determine his first eleven immediately,” Ngala explained to Citizen Digital. “He is now okay after understanding his players and ready to reclaim the title.”

Akonnor’s baptism of fire came on September 10 when Gor Mahia faced Tanzanian giants Simba SC during the annual Simba Day celebrations. The record Kenyan champions were handed a 2-0 defeat in Dar es Salaam, but the experience gave the Ghanaian tactician a firsthand view of his side’s potential and weaknesses.
Back on the local scene, the 19-time FKF Premier League champions suffered a 1-0 defeat to Bidco United in their opening match of the season. However, once his full squad returned from international duty, Akonnor’s impact began to show—winning three of their next four games.
“The coach is experienced,” Ngala added. “After his three consecutive league wins, we are confident he will help the team redeem itself from last season’s trophy-less disappointment.”
Gor Mahia currently sit third on the league table with nine points, just one behind leaders Kakamega Homeboyz but with a game in hand. Their latest outing—a commanding 3-0 victory over Posta Rangers—signaled a side quickly rediscovering its rhythm under new management.
Despite their recent success, the club faces minor injury setbacks. Lead striker Ebenezer Adukwaw, one of Akonnor’s key signings from Ghana, remains under observation after suffering a shoulder injury on October 10 during the ODM@20 finals in Mombasa. Adukwaw had scored the winning goal that handed Gor Mahia the celebratory trophy before picking up the knock.
Another new recruit, Lewis Bandi, is sidelined with soft tissue injuries, though team doctors expect him to return soon.
Gor Mahia’s next challenge will be against Mathare United on October 30 in a midweek fixture. Mathare come into the game buoyed by a narrow 1-0 win over Shabana FC in Kisii, and the match promises to test Akonnor’s tactical depth once again.
After their emphatic win against Posta Rangers, Akonnor dedicated the victory to the club’s late patron, Raila Odinga. “All my players were in good spirits and we could do nothing other than a deserved win in his honour. We were all happy after the win, and we are planning to do more for our fans,” he said.
With momentum building and confidence restored, Gor Mahia now look poised to challenge for the crown once again—guided by a coach who finally seems to have his finger firmly on the pulse of the Green Army.
