The Netherlands international, who also boasts Nigerian heritage, has yet to feature under Carrick’s tenure due to injury.

His absence didn't stop United from securing massive wins over Manchester City and Arsenal, but his return adds a vital dimension to the attack just as the Super Eagles core of Fulham arrives in Manchester.

According to the club’s official website, Zirkzee returned to full training at Carrington this week, handing Carrick a timely selection headache.

“Yeah, Josh is back training this week, which is good news,” Carrick said. “Obviously, first time... so he's been out for a short amount of time, but first kind of training with us since we've been here, so that's great to have Josh back.”

Beyond the tactical advantage, Carrick used the update to shut down growing speculation regarding Zirkzee's future at the club.

Amidst rumours linking the forward with a move away, the United head coach insisted the focus remains entirely on the pitch.

“Josh has just been trying to work and get fit around the group,” Carrick added. “He trained yesterday for the first time and that’s as far as it goes with me and Josh. I’m looking forward to working with him and nothing more needs to be said.”

The Super Eagles triple threat

The timing of Zirkzee's return couldn't be more critical. Fulham’s Nigerian contingent has been in scintillating form since returning from AFCON 2025.

Chukwueze does not want Iwobi's help anymore.
Chukwueze is in fine scoring form.

Calvin Bassey remains a rock in the Cottagers' defence, while the creative spark of Alex Iwobi and the explosive pace of Samuel Chukwueze pose a direct threat to United’s momentum.

With Zirkzee back in the squad, United fans will be hoping their own Nigerian-connected star can prove decisive in neutralising the threat posed by his Super Eagles counterparts.
