‘Fulham isn’t his final destination’ — Super Eagles star tipped for big move by teammate
Calvin Bassey’s Fulham journey may only be a chapter in a larger football story, as teammate Kenny Tete has boldly suggested the Nigerian international is destined for a bigger stage.
After rebuilding his confidence and reputation in West London, Bassey has gone from Ajax outcast to one of the Premier League’s most rugged and valuable African defenders, and expectations around him are rising fast.
Tete hails Bassey’s evolution and hints at future move
Kenny Tete, when speaking to Voetbal Primeur about Bassey's trajectory, praised his teammates’s mentality, hinting that Fulham could only be a stepping-stone for the Nigerian.
“He’s a tank, a fighter,” Tete said. “When he came here, I thought things weren’t looking good at Ajax, but I don’t think Ajax was very good at the time. Maybe it just wasn’t the right fit. He’s a perfect fit here. Everyone loves him. Fulham isn’t his final destination.”
Since arriving from Ajax for €22.5 million in 2023, Bassey has rediscovered the steel and confidence that first turned heads at Rangers.
Powerful defending, energy, and a growing leadership presence have made him a key figure under Marco Silva.
Silva backs Bassey to reach elite level
Even with the revival, Bassey has had costly moments, including an error that led directly to a goal in a 2–1 defeat to Newcastle, tying him for the most of such defensive mistakes in the league this season.
But instead of criticism, Silva offered protection, saying, “Mistakes are part of the game. What matters is how you react. Calvin knows what went wrong, but I was pleased with the way he responded afterwards.”
With confidence from teammates and backing from his manager, Bassey looks set for a major leap, and Nigerians will hope he’s flawless when the Super Eagles face Gabon in a crucial World Cup playoff next month.
