Frank Onyeka: Ex-Chelsea boss keen to add Super Eagles midfielder before transfer deadline
Frank Onyeka has emerged as the primary January target for Championship leaders Coventry City as Frank Lampard looks to cement his side’s push for a Premier League return.
According to reports, the Sky Blues are currently in advanced negotiations with Brentford to secure the Nigerian international before Monday’s transfer deadline.
Frank Onyeka is viewed by Lampard as the "missing piece" in a midfield that has occasionally lacked physical dominance during the winter months.
Frank Onyeka to leave Brentford?
Despite Coventry sitting three points clear at the top of the table, a recent dip in form—yielding only seven points from their last six matches, has prompted the manager to move for "The Tank."
Coventry are reportedly exploring both a straight permanent transfer and a loan deal with an obligation to buy. Lampard, who shares the same agent as Onyeka, is said to be personally driving the pursuit, impressed by the 28-year-old’s high-energy pressing and top-flight experience.
Frank Onyeka has found minutes hard to come by under Bees manager Keith Andrews this season, appearing only six times as a substitute in the Premier League.
The midfielder recently revealed his desire to play for Manchester United, but with no real interest coming from Old Trafford, he may be forced to look elsewhere.
Onyeka's contract is currently set to run until June 2027, and Brentford are reportedly open to a sale to trim their wage bill and allow the midfielder to find regular football.
