Manchester United supporters took to social media to mock Grimsby Town after the League Two side were eliminated from the Carabao Cup with a heavy 5-0 defeat to Brentford on Tuesday.

The reaction stems from Grimsby's own giant-killing act just months earlier, when they sensationally knocked the Red Devils out of the competition in a dramatic penalty shootout.

A Tale of Two Cup Ties

United's 2025-26 season began on shaky ground, with a Premier League loss to Arsenal and a draw against Fulham. Their struggles were compounded in the Carabao Cup's second round when they were held to a 2-2 draw by Grimsby before crashing out 12-11 on penalties.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana endured a particularly difficult night in that fixture. The performance seemingly prompted swift action from the club, as the Cameroonian was subsequently loaned to Turkish side Trabzonspor, with Senne Lammens arriving from Royal Antwerp as a replacement on deadline day.

Fans Settle the Score Online

After facing widespread ridicule following their own cup exit, some United fans seized the opportunity to return the favour after Grimsby's thrashing at the hands of Brentford.

As originally reported by Goal.com, One user on X wrote: "But you have won your 'win against Manchester United' trophy already…idiots…Grimsby will always stay as Grimsby and no one ever will remember its name…"

Another posted: "Out you go hahahahaha bye bye."

The sentiment was shared by many, with one fan simply writing, "Let's all laugh at Grimsby town fc," followed by a string of laughing emojis.

Grimsby Manager's Pre-Match Comments

Adding fuel to the fire, Grimsby manager David Artell had suggested before the match that Brentford would pose a sterner test than Ruben Amorim's United side.

"I don’t want loads of letters from Manchester United fans from Kenya or Norway - or Stretford - but I think they’re still in that process of finding their way again," Artell said. "Brentford are fully in, fully understanding. That makes it so much more difficult."A Blessing in Disguise for United?

Since their humbling defeat at Blundell Park, Manchester United's fortunes have improved. The team is currently on a three-match winning streak in the Premier League.

With no European football this season, the early cup exit may have inadvertently benefited the Red Devils by providing more preparation time for league fixtures. Manager Ruben Amorim acknowledged this advantage after a recent victory over Brighton, noting his side was starting to benefit from the extra time on the training ground.

United will now aim for a fourth consecutive league win when they face Nottingham Forest on Saturday, in what will be Sean Dyche's first home game in charge at the City Ground.
