Super Eagles: What Nigerians are saying about Rangers boy Fernandez after debut goal for Nigeria
Emmanuel Fernandez was shocked when Nigeria called him. His words, not anyone else's. "When I first got the call to come and play for Nigeria, I was a bit shocked that the national team wanted me," he told the NFF's official media team.
"I am grateful I am here and I am grateful for the opportunity."
By Tuesday night, nobody in Nigeria was shocked at all. They were just demanding more.

Fernandez shines for Super Eagles
The Rangers defender scored his first Super Eagles goal in the 41st minute of Nigeria's 2-2 draw with Jordan at the Mardan Sports Complex in Antalya.
It was his first full start. Bright Osayi-Samuel delivered the cross, the ball found Fernandez at the back post, and he controlled it before shifting onto his left and finishing past Jordan goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila.
The composure was the thing. Not frantic, not scrambled. A defender finishing like a forward who knew exactly where the ball was going.
He played the full 90 minutes, keeping his shape and his concentration through a second half that turned physical and increasingly stretched.
When Jordan equalised in the 77th minute and the game began to unravel around him, Fernandez stayed composed. The mark of a centre-back who has been playing European football all season.
That European experience is what makes his profile interesting. Fernandez joined Rangers from Peterborough United in the summer of 2025 and has spent this season facing Champions League and Europa League opposition at Ibrox.
He has six goals in all competitions for Rangers this season. He has now added one more for Nigeria. The Rangers fan platform Heart and Hand responded to his goal with three words: "There he is."
Nigerian fans were considerably more elaborate.

"Emmanuel Fernandez is a good addition to our squad. You can see the leadership qualities. He scored and he was calling Moses Simon, and the likes, giving them instructions," one said.
"I believe Emmanuel Fernandez will come to stay. Some bit of ruggedness and sharpening like Bassey would do him well. It took Bassey time. He will adapt," another satisfied Nigerian stated.
"Bassey was brilliant at Rangers, and Fernandez is also brilliant at Rangers now. Would love to see a Bassey and Fernandez partnership in the Nigeria team," stated a third before one that requires no elaboration: "Another Victor Osimhen in the making. Captain without the captain band."
Fernandez revealed he was formerly a midfielder before converting to centre-back, which explains the composure in possession and the instinct to step out of the defensive line.

It also explains the goal. Some defenders wait to be found. He found the space himself.
Two caps, one goal. 90 minutes of leadership on his first start. Nigeria did not need long to make up their minds.
