EURO 2024: Ballon d‘Or favourite Bellingham heads England to victory vs Serbia

Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham was the hero as England edged out Serbia to begin the EURO 2024 with a win.

Bellingham’s first half header proved to be the winner as the Three Lions sealed a narrow 1-0 win on Sunday night.

Despite a brave fight from Serbia in the second half, Gareth Southgate’s men only managed to hold firmly to the narrowest of wins with Bukayo Saka setting up Bellingham for the winner.

Despite their bright start, England couldn't add to their lead before halftime, with Harry Kane striking the post from close range in a golden opportunity in the second 45.

However, Serbia came out fighting in the second half, putting Gareth Southgate's side under immense pressure as they searched for an equaliser. 

The Three Lions were forced to defend resolutely, with their backline and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford standing firm against the Serbian onslaught.

As the clock ticked, England struggled to regain control of the match, with Serbia growing in confidence and belief. However, the young and talented English side displayed their resilience and determination, holding on to secure a crucial opening three points.

While it wasn't a vintage performance from the pre-tournament favourites, the result is all that matters in a major competition like EURO 2024. 

With Bellingham leading the charge, England will be hoping to build on this hard-fought victory and hit their stride as the tournament progresses.
