Tusker forward Erick Kapaito says returning the team to winning ways matters more than chasing personal glory, even as he shoulders the responsibility of replacing former talisman Ryan Ogam.

The brewers edged Murang’a Seal 1-0 at the SportPesa Arena on Sunday afternoon, a result that eased pressure on the team after a sluggish start to the season.

Kapaito, who netted the decisive goal in the 79th minute, believes the victory could be the spark they need to turn things around.

“The goal is to help the team win — individual awards will come later,” Kapaito said after the match.

“We have been struggling and really needed the three points. My teammates and I worked hard throughout the week, and now we can finally smile.”

The game started on a cagey note, both sides canceling each other out in the first half. But when a loose ball broke down the right flank, Dennis Oalo reacted quickly, whipping in a pinpoint cross that Kapaito met with a composed orthodox finish to hand Tusker a much-needed win.

That goal marked Kapaito’s second since returning to the club after a spell in Tanzania, where he impressed before injuries temporarily slowed his progress.

His comeback to the Ruaraka-based side comes at a crucial time, with Tusker sitting 14th on the log and struggling for consistency.

Before Kapaito’s return, Ryan Ogam had filled the striking role with remarkable success, scoring 15 goals in 17 games before sealing a dream move to Austrian outfit Wolfsberger AC following his standout displays for Harambee Stars at CHAN 2024. Now, Kapaito hopes to continue that legacy.

“It is a blessing,” he reflected. “Sometimes, after injury, when you help the team win, it reminds you why you keep going. I thank God for everything — He keeps blessing me more.”

Despite the relief of victory, the 2021 FKF Premier League MVP remains grounded about the road ahead.

“We should be challenging for the title,” he said. “We’re not in a good place right now, so we need to work hard to improve. One win is good, but we must build on it.”

With experience, humility, and quiet determination, Kapaito’s message was clear — Tusker’s revival comes before personal accolades.
