The Chelsea boss had earlier been cautioned in the first half for protesting referee Anthony Taylor’s decision not to award a penalty after Alejandro Garnacho appeared to be brought down by Dominik Szoboszlai inside the box.
It marks Chelsea’s fourth red card in five matches across all competitions, following earlier dismissals for Robert Sanchez, Trevoh Chalobah, and Joao Pedro in games against Manchester United, Brighton, and Benfica, respectively.
As per Premier League regulations, Maresca was not permitted to attend the post-match press conference following his dismissal.
The Football Association has since confirmed that Maresca will serve a one-game suspension, ruling him out of Chelsea’s next fixture, a league clash against Nottingham Forest on October 18, 2025, after the international break.
He will, however, return to the dugout for Chelsea’s Champions League tie against Ajax four days later and their Premier League meeting with Sunderland the following weekend.
