Cucurella, who provided the assist for the Brazilian's goal, confirmed that they had been training to target the space left open by the Liverpool forward.

“We know that [Mohamed] Salah is always ready for the counterattack so we practiced that and our manager [Enzo Maresca] said that the space might be there [on Liverpool’s right side],” Cucurella told Sky Sports.

The Spaniard explained how the strategy paid off perfectly in stoppage time.

“We saw that it was the last minute, but we kept attacking. I tried to give my last effort, and Enzo gave me the ball, and I crossed for Estevao.

“I think we deserve it [win against Liverpool]. We started the game very well, and then in the second half, we started not in the right way again – we need to improve these things.”

Chelsea will hope to build on this result when they take on Nottingham Forest after the international break.
