Nigeria’s Super Eagles head into the AFCON 2025 third-place playoff with history firmly in sight as they prepare to face Egypt in Casablanca. Beyond the disappointment of missing out on the final, the bronze-medal clash offers Nigeria a chance to further cement their status as Africa’s most decorated nation at the tournament.

With pride, records and momentum all on the line, Saturday’s encounter promises to be far more than a consolation fixture.

Super Eagles chase AFCON medal milestone against Egypt

The meeting between Nigeria and Egypt in the third-place playoff sets up a heavyweight showdown between two of Africa’s most successful football nations.

Both sides arrive at this stage after painful semi-final exits, with Nigeria losing 4-2 on penalties to hosts Morocco after a tense goalless draw in Rabat, while Egypt were eliminated by Senegal. Yet, the bronze-medal match carries significant historical importance, particularly for the Super Eagles.

Nigeria currently hold the record for the most AFCON medals, with 16 podium finishes to their name. Egypt follow closely with 13 medals, although the Pharaohs boast an unmatched seven gold titles.

Interestingly, exactly half of Nigeria’s AFCON medals have been bronze, underlining how familiar the Super Eagles are with bouncing back strongly after near misses. A victory over Egypt would not only extend Nigeria’s overall medal record but also see them move further clear as the nation with the most AFCON bronze medals.

Should the Super Eagles prevail in Casablanca, they would claim an eighth bronze medal, stretching their lead ahead of Ivory Coast, who trail with four.

In that sense, this match represents more than just a morale booster, it is an opportunity for Nigeria to reinforce their dominance in AFCON history and add another chapter to their long-standing rivalry with Egypt.

Meanwhile, despite the heartbreak of their semi-final defeat, the Super Eagles have shown little sign of losing focus. Defender Calvin Bassey has been vocal about the team’s determination to finish the tournament on a high by securing the bronze medal.

Reflecting on the loss to Morocco, the Fulham defender insisted there were no regrets, stressing that the players left everything on the pitch in a fiercely contested encounter.

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account, Bassey highlighted the unity within the squad throughout the competition. “We thank God in all situations. A gutting way to end the tournament,” he wrote.

He added, “The support & togetherness we’ve felt has been special. Sorry we couldn’t take it all the way, we fought and gave it our all. We’ll build on this. Not finished yet though, we still have something to push for.” His words reflect a dressing room still driven by purpose rather than disappointment.

However, Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle faces selection challenges ahead of the clash. Bassey himself is suspended for the final, while Victor Osimhen remains an injury doubt, potentially depriving the Super Eagles of two key figures.

Even so, Nigeria will turn their full attention to Saturday’s showdown at the Mohammed V Sports Complex, where two African heavyweights will battle for a place on the podium. With history beckoning and motivation still burning, the Super Eagles know a bronze medal against Egypt would be a fitting way to close their AFCON 2025 campaign.
