A heated on-field argument between star striker Victor Osimhen and winger Ademola Lookman cast a shadow over the Super Eagles' commanding 4-0 victory against Mozambique in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Round of 16 on Monday.

Despite Nigeria cruising to a quarter-final spot at the Complexe Sportif de Fes, the confrontation between the two key players has become a major talking point.

The incident occurred in the 63rd minute when Lookman, who had already assisted both of Osimhen's goals, attempted to take on a defender instead of passing. An visibly frustrated Osimhen, who was on a hat-trick, confronted his teammate, reportedly shouting, "It’s a team game, pass the ball."

Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi stepped in to de-escalate the situation but was reportedly pushed aside by the incensed striker. Ndidi was later seen consoling Lookman. Following the clash, Osimhen appeared less willing to make attacking runs when Lookman was in possession.

Just five minutes after the argument, coach Eric Chelle substituted Osimhen for Paris FC winger Moses Simon. After the final whistle, Osimhen did not celebrate with his teammates, heading directly down the tunnel while officials reportedly prevented other players from approaching him.

Lookman and Chelle Cool off Tensions

Lookman and Chelle did not want to be drawn into the incident after the game. “Nothing happened just a discussion on the pitch, that is it. I do not know what the big issue is,” Lookman told the media after the game.

“This is the question about my management. What happened on the pitch will stay in the group, I don’t need to tell you what happened or what will happen, I will keep that to me,” Chelle weighed in as per Osasu Obayiuwana.

The match itself was a showcase of Nigeria's attacking prowess. Lookman opened the scoring in the 20th minute, his third goal of the tournament. Osimhen then broke his one-game goal drought, finding the net in the 25th minute before completing his brace shortly after halftime in the 46th minute.

Sevilla's Akor Adams sealed the comprehensive win in the 75th minute, scoring his first AFCON goal from a powerful right-footed shot, with Lookman providing his third assist of the night.

The on-field spat has sparked widespread debate among fans on social media, with many criticising Osimhen's conduct despite his two-goal performance. The incident has raised questions about team harmony as the Super Eagles advance to the next stage of the competition.
