Disgraced ex-Spanish FA chairman attacked with eggs at book signing

Former Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales returned to the public eye this week, and it did not go smoothly after eggs were thrown at him during the launch of his new book, “Matar a Rubiales” (“Killing Rubiales”).

The event, meant to mark his re-emergence following months away from public life, instead became a chaotic scene, further intensifying scrutiny surrounding the controversial former football chief.

Rubiales’ book delves into his version of events surrounding the infamous non-consensual kiss involving Jenni Hermoso after Spain’s 2023 Women’s World Cup triumph, the incident that led to his conviction for sexual assault.

The launch, held on Thursday, quickly descended into drama when a member of the audience, rumoured to be his uncle hurled eggs at Rubiales in full view of cameras.

The former RFEF president initially attempted to defend himself before moving toward the perpetrator, but security and attendees intervened, restraining the attacker and preventing a physical confrontation.

Despite the time elapsed since the incident, this new chapter shows the public anger still surrounding Rubiales and his continued efforts to justify his actions through the book.

The book launch marked one of Rubiales’ first public appearances since his February conviction. Although he avoided jail time and was issued a fine, both his legal team and prosecutors have filed appeals, with the former seeking to overturn the ruling and the latter arguing the punishment was too lenient.

With the egg-throwing incident now circulating widely online, renewed criticism has surged. Authorities are expected to determine what action, if any, will be taken against the individual who attacked him.
