The spotlight is firmly on captain Enzo Fernandez, whose recent comments have sparked controversy both inside and outside Stamford Bridge.

Manager Liam Rosenior confirmed that Fernandez has been suspended and will miss upcoming fixtures, including the clash against Manchester City.

“As a football club, with me as part of the decision, he won’t be available,” Rosenior said. “A line was crossed in terms of our culture and what we want to build.”

Despite the sanction, Rosenior was keen to stress that the decision was not personal. “Enzo, as a character, a person and a player, I have the utmost respect. He’s frustrated because he wants us to be successful,” he added.

The Chelsea boss also revealed that the decision was a collective one, involving the club’s hierarchy and players. “The door is not closed on Enzo. It’s a sanction. You have to protect the culture.”

Fernandez’s recent remarks, including admitting tactical inferiority after the Champions League exit and hinting at a possible move to Madrid, were seen as crossing an internal line at a club already struggling for stability.

John Obi Mikel blasts Fernandez leadership

“That is not a leader,” Mikel said. “You don’t make that statement after we’ve been disgracefully dumped out of the Champions League, wearing the captain’s armband.”

The ex-Super Eagles star went even further, questioning Fernandez’s commitment to the club. “No player is bigger than the football club. If he’s had enough, put your hands up and go. We move on.”

Mikel also warned that such behaviour undermines the values Chelsea was built on. “This is Chelsea, not a stepping stone. If your heart is already in Madrid, you shouldn’t wear the blue jersey.”

With reports linking Fernandez to Real Madrid and Chelsea slipping to sixth in the league, the controversy could not have come at a worse tim, leaving both the player and the club at a critical crossroads.
