Chelsea icon John Terry has reportedly emerged as a surprise candidate for the vacant manager’s position at Championship side Oxford United following the departure of Gary Rowett just days before Christmas.
Rowett, left the club with Oxford sitting 21st in the Championship table, only outside the relegation zone on goal difference.
His exit has triggered an urgent search for a new head coach as the club looks to stabilise its season and avoid a relegation battle.
Terry to replace Rowett
According to reports, Oxford United have placed Terry on a shortlist of potential candidates.
The 45-year-old former England captain is keen to take his first step into a full-time head coaching role after several years of coaching experience behind the scenes.
A source close to the situation said, “John Terry is ambitious and determined to prove himself as a manager. He feels ready for the challenge and sees Oxford United as a club where he could begin his journey in senior management.”
Terry previously served as assistant head coach at Aston Villa under Dean Smith, where he was credited with playing a key role in improving the club’s defensive structure.
Since 2023, he has been working as an academy coach at Chelsea, continuing to develop his coaching credentials at his former club.
However, Terry is expected to face strong competition for the role. Oxford United are also believed to be considering several experienced names, including former Sunderland and Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray, ex-Rangers and QPR manager Michael Beale, as well as Paddy McCarthy and Liam Manning.
Another club insider noted, “Oxford is casting the net wide. They want someone who can deliver results quickly but also align with the club’s long-term vision. There’s a lot of interest in the job.”
While Terry’s lack of head coaching experience could be seen as a risk, his leadership pedigree and high-profile playing career make him an intriguing option as Oxford United weighs its next move.
