Big challenge - Desire Oparanozie names WAFCON favorites
Former Super Falcons striker Desire Oparanozie has highlighted the increased competitiveness, identifying South Africa, Morocco, and her native Nigeria as the frontrunners to win the WAFCON.
The 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) is scheduled for July 5 to 26 in Morocco.
What Oparanozie said
Oparanozie believes the landscape of women's football in Africa has significantly evolved, setting the stage for a fiercely contested Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The former Guingamp and Dijon forward while speaking on SuperSport added that the WAFCON will be a big challenge.
"A lot has changed in the women's game. I think South Africa are favourites, Morocco and Nigeria as well. It's really going to be a very big challenge," Oparanozie said.
The Super Falcons are nine-time African champions and are looking for an historic 10th win in Morocco.
The defending champions, South Africa, have steadily built a strong squad and tactical approach under coach Ellis, culminating in their historic 2022 triumph.
Morocco, as hosts and also having made an impact at the last FIFA Women's World Cup, are expected to leverage home advantage and their continuously improving infrastructure.
Nigeria, despite their rich history, face a renewed challenge from these emerging powers.
