Nigeria’s commanding performance against Algeria in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarterfinal was slightly overshadowed on Saturday after midfielder Wilfred Ndidi received a yellow card that rules him out of the semifinal clash against Morocco.

The caution, Ndidi’s second of the tournament, came in the 68th minute with Nigeria already holding a comfortable 2–0 lead over the Desert Foxes.

Under AFCON regulations, the booking triggers an automatic one-match suspension.

Ndidi, widely regarded as the heartbeat of Nigeria’s midfield, was penalised during a moment of sustained Algerian pressure as they searched desperately for a route back into the game.

Shortly after the incident, the former Leicester City midfielder appeared to be struggling with a knock and was replaced by Raphael Onyedika.

Victor Osimhen opened the scoring in the 47th minute with a powerful header, rising above the Algerian defense to meet a pinpoint cross and directing the ball past goalkeeper Lucas Zidane.

Ten minutes later, Akor Adams doubled Nigeria’s advantage, finishing off a sweeping team move involving Alex Iwobi and Osimhen.
