The club announced that the parting was mutually agreed upon, with coach Ricardo Moniz explaining that he did not have the required physical level to compete.
“He did not deliver what was expected of a player of his status”, Moniz said. “His level of fitness is not up to what we expect from a player in this Championship.”
L’Equipe reported that Mendy struggled at the club, playing only eight matches, in which he had many “high-profile, on-pitch blunders.”
Mendy struggling since acquittal
Mendy was acquitted on July 14, 2023, of one count of rape and one count of sexual assault after an initial trial in January cleared him of six counts of rape.
He signed for Lorient in the French top flight shortly after, but struggled in the 15 games he played before he was released by the club. He then signed for FC Zurich, where he has now been let go.
