Benfica vs Real Madrid: I'm emotional — Los Blancos coach reacts to Jose Mourinho's comments
Real Madrid’s head coach, Alvaro Arbeloa, reacted emotionally to Jose Mourinho’s kind comments ahead of the Champions League clash between Los Blancos and Benfica.
The former right-back played for Los Merengues under Mourinho; now, while in the dugout ahead of Wednesday's final UCL league phase against Benfica, coached by the former Chelsea boss, he discussed the influence of Jose on his career.
What Arbeloa said
While Arbeloa was not one of the storied members of the Real Madrid squads he was part of, Mourinho said he was one of the best players he coached.
“[Arbeloa] might not have been among the best players he had at Real Madrid, but maybe he was one of the best,” Mourinho said.
During his pre-match interview for the Benfica game, Arbeloa, who replaced Xabi Alonso earlier in the year, was asked about Mourinho’s comments. He expressed elation, sharing that he held the Portuguese tactician in high regard.
“Yes, yes, of course. I didn’t miss the Mister’s press conference. I didn’t miss them when I was a player and we’d show them all in the dressing room… and I didn’t miss them today either,” he said, per the Football Espana.
“It was a tremendous honour to hear everything he said about me. I’m emotional and happy because he’s been much more than just a coach to me. Above all, on a personal level, he’s been very important throughout my entire career.
“Today, I also consider him a great friend. From here, I want to thank him for all his kind words. I’m really looking forward to seeing him tomorrow and giving him a big hug.”
