Barcelona vs Almeria: Captain Roberto saves Blaugrana against worst LALIGA team
Barcelona looked unconvincing once more; even more disturbing was that the performance came against the league's basement club, Almeria; however, individual brilliance from Sergi Roberto helped the Blaugrana to maximum points.
Barcelona hosted Almeria at Montjuic, hoping to turn their fortunes after a run of three games without a win.
The clash was expected to be a walk in the park for the hosts as well because the visitors had yet to register a single victory in 17 league games prior. However, they found it complicated but managed to squeeze out a victory.
How it happened
Barcelona had the bulk of possession early on, but Almeria looked more threatening than the visitors should allow in transition, and this was the tale of the game.
The Blaugrana took the lead in the 33rd minute, capitalising on a well-worked corner routine, which saw the second ball fall to Raphinha, who smashed in from close range.
Barca's defensive frailties have held them back this season on a number of occasions, and in the 41st minute, Almeria capitalised as Leo Baptistao beat the Blaugrana highline to finish past Inaki Pena for the equaliser.
Barcelona retook the lead in the 60th minute from another set piece; this time a brilliant header from Roberto directed Gundogan's cross into the net.
The lead, however, was let slip again when a break in communication between Ronald Araujo and Pena created a loose ball situation in the box, which Edgar Gonzalez capitalised on to restore parity.
The hosts had the last laugh, however, when Robert Lewandowski played Roberto through on goal, and the captain finished brilliantly to restore Barcelona's lead for the third and final time in the game.
