Barcelona receives injury boost as Dani Olmo targets return for Catalan Derby
Barcelona’s injury problems are gradually clearing after a turbulent start to the season, a trend highlighted by their recent 2–1 win over Frankfurt.
Yet two crucial players, Dani Olmo and Gavi, remain sidelined.
Olmo, who dislocated his shoulder earlier this month, was initially handed a four-week recovery timeline.
Now, the Catalan international is accelerating toward a return that could coincide with one of the most symbolic fixtures on the club’s calendar.
Espanyol Clash Targeted as Comeback Date
According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, Olmo is making excellent progress and has set his sights on Barcelona’s first match of 2026, the Catalan derby against Espanyol on January 3.
Club sources say the midfielder is highly motivated.
“Dani is pushing hard. He wants to be there for the derby, it’s a match that means a lot to him and to the supporters,” a team insider said.
Medical staff are said to be optimistic. Since the injury is not muscle-related, the final phase of his recovery is expected to be more straightforward.
“He is responding very well. The shoulder is stable, and he’s showing no signs of stress,” a member of Barça’s medical team reportedly noted.
Despite the positive outlook, the club will remain cautious given Olmo’s previous injury setbacks. But all signs point to the 26-year-old being ready in time.
