Atletico target another Super Eagles star after Lookman gives immediate impact
Atletico Madrid are reportedly considering a summer move for Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen following Ademola Lookman’s explosive start to life in the Spanish capital.
Los Rojiblancos are preparing for a potentially transformative transfer window, with uncertainty surrounding the futures of Julián Alvarez and Alexander Sørloth. And after seeing the instant impact of one Super Eagles star, the club could now turn to another.
Osimhen identified as priority target for Atletico
According to reports from Turkiye Today, Atletico have earmarked Osimhen as a priority signing should one of their main forwards depart.
Alvarez has been strongly linked with Arsenal, while Sørloth is attracting interest from Fenerbahçe, Juventus and clubs in the Saudi Pro League.
Regardless of who leaves, Atletico would command a significant transfer fee, funds that could help finance a move for Osimhen.
The Galatasaray striker is also being monitored by Barcelona as a long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski, meaning Diego Simeone’s side will face stiff competition. Barcelona’s stature and consistent silverware prospects could complicate Atletico’s pursuit.
Meanwhile, Galatasaray are reportedly demanding around €140 million to sanction Osimhen’s departure, having only signed him permanently from Napoli last summer for €75 million.
Lookman’s impact fuels ambition
Interest in Osimhen has intensified following Lookman’s blistering start at the Wanda Metropolitano. Since arriving from Atalanta in the winter window, the winger has already produced two goals and two assists in just three appearances.
His standout showing, scoring and assisting in Atletico’s 4-0 Copa del Rey win over Barcelona, has reinforced the club’s belief in the quality of Nigerian talent.
However, meeting Galatasaray’s €140 million valuation would likely require Atletico to sell one of their current stars and break their transfer record. While ambitious, the move would signal a major statement of intent.
For now, the situation remains fluid, but prising Osimhen away from Turkey will be anything but straightforward.
