Neuer was at fault for Arsenal's first goal after failing to claim a corner kick and was the villain again for the Gunners' third goal after being caught out by Gabriel Martinelli, effectively ending the German champions' unbeaten start to the season.

Arsenal vs Bayern Munich: How it happened

Arsenal claimed a statement European victory after surviving early Bayern pressure and striking first through a well-worked set piece. Bukayo Saka’s corner found Jurriën Timber, who rose above Manuel Neuer to nod the Gunners in front.

Bayern, unfazed by recent comeback results, hit back 10 minutes later when Joshua Kimmich picked out Serge Gnabry, whose cushioned volley set up Lennart Karl to fire past David Raya for his second goal in as many Champions League starts.

Both teams traded big chances before the break, but Arsenal took control after halftime. Mikel Merino headed inches wide, Cristhian Mosquera was somehow denied by a spectacular Neuer stop, and Saka nearly pounced after the keeper pushed away Declan Rice’s effort.

The breakthrough finally arrived when substitute Riccardo Calafiori burst down the left and delivered a pinpoint cross for Noni Madueke to finish clinically.

Bayern pushed forward in desperation, only to be punished on the counter by Gabriel Martinelli, who rounded Neuer and rolled the ball into an empty net.

That goal ended Bayern’s 22-game unbeaten run and sealed a famous win for Arsenal, who extended their own unbeaten streak to 16 matches and sent a powerful message about their Champions League ambitions.
