Arsenal, Man City do not deserve Premier League title according to Man United legend
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has sparked debate by claiming neither Arsenal nor Manchester City deserve to win the Premier League title this season.
Despite both sides grinding out crucial victories over the weekend, the former midfielder insists he remains unconvinced by the overall quality of the title contenders.
Scholes questions Arsenal, Man City title credentials
Paul Scholes did not hold back when assessing the championship race involving Arsenal F.C. and Manchester City F.C..
Arsenal currently sit top of the table with 64 points, five clear of Pep Guardiola’s side, who still have a game in hand against Crystal Palace. The Gunners secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over Chelsea on Sunday, while City edged Leeds United 1-0 on Saturday to stay within touching distance.
Yet Scholes believes neither side has truly convinced him as champions-elect, “If I had to pick one of them, it would be [Man] City,” Scholes said on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast.
“But I am struggling to find which team. None of them have convinced me that they should be Premier League champions. I don’t think they should give the trophy out this year.”
The United great even suggested Arsenal could go down as one of the “worst” champions if they lift the title, a remark that has fuelled further debate among supporters.
Title race set for defining Etihad clash
Despite criticism of their performances, Arsenal remain in control of the race heading into the final stretch. Mikel Arteta’s side have been accused in some quarters of winning without fully convincing, but results have kept them top after 38 demanding fixtures loom large.
City, meanwhile, remain firmly in contention and will host Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium next month in what could prove to be a decisive encounter.
A first league win at the Etihad since 2015 would significantly boost Arsenal’s hopes, while even a draw could prove valuable depending on the points gap at the time.
Before that blockbuster meeting, Arsenal travel to Brighton & Hove Albion, while City welcome Nottingham Forest. With margins tight and pressure mounting, Scholes’ bold verdict has added another layer of intrigue to an already gripping title race.
