AFCON 2025: ‘There are a few things that we can improve on’ - Super Eagles goalscorer reveals lapses in the team
Super Eagles claimed a narrow 2-1 victory over Tanzania in their Africa Cup of Nations opener in Morocco on Tuesday night.
The 32-year-old defender was instrumental in the Group C clash, scoring Nigeria's first goal with a powerful header from an Alex Iwobi cross.
The goal, his first for his country, was a highlight in a dominant defensive performance that earned him the Man of the Match award.
Ajayi speaks on where to improve in the team
Reflecting on the match, Ajayi believes the team cannot rely only on attackers to score goals in the tournament.
Despite the positive result, the former Arsenal player was quick to acknowledge that the team has work to do before their next group match against Tunisia.
He emphasised the need for the Super Eagles to become more clinical in finishing games and securing results earlier to prevent nervy endings.
“There are a few things that we can improve on, but also a lot of positives that we can take from the game as well,” Ajayi explained.
“Like I said, we are definitely aware there are things that we need to do better, like seeing out the game and also killing teams off. We will be working really hard on the training to put that right.”
With three points secured, Nigeria now turns their attention to the upcoming fixture against Tunisia, where another victory could secure their spot in the knockout stages.
