AFCON 2025: Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey to miss final game
Nigeria’s quest for AFCON 2025 glory has been dealt a major setback after key defender Calvin Bassey received a yellow card during the semifinal encounter against host nation Morocco.
The caution was issued in the 32nd minute at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, following a tactical foul as Morocco pushed forward in a tense contest.
The booking proved costly, as it was Bassey’s second of the knockout stages after he was booked in the round of 16 clash against Mozambique.
CAF rules confirm automatic suspension
Under CAF disciplinary regulations, any player who accumulates two yellow cards during the knockout rounds is automatically suspended for the next match.
As a result, Bassey will miss Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 final should the Super Eagles successfully navigate past Morocco.
The suspension represents a major blow for Nigeria, given Bassey’s importance to the team’s defensive structure throughout the tournament.
The former Rangers defender has been one of Nigeria’s standout performers at AFCON 2025.
If Nigeria secures victory over Morocco, Chelle will be forced to reorganise his defense for Sunday’s final. Options such as Semi Ajayi or other squad members are expected to step in to fill the void left by Bassey’s absence.
