With expectations rising around Bafana Bafana and Angola looking to upset the balance, this group-stage opener could set the tone for both nations.

South Africa vs Angola Preview

South Africa return to AFCON with growing confidence after re-establishing themselves as one of the continent’s most organised sides.

Their only tournament triumph came on home soil in 1996, but that period marked a golden era, as they followed it up with second- and third-place finishes in the two editions that followed.

Recent years have brought renewed belief. Bafana Bafana finished third at the 2023 AFCON, recording a competition-high five clean sheets, and have since booked automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup after topping a group that included Nigeria.

They were equally impressive during AFCON 2025 qualification, going unbeaten (W4, D2) and scoring 16 goals — a tally surpassed only by Morocco.

Hugo Broos’ side arrive at the finals unbeaten in 11 matches across all competitions (W5, D6), and that consistency has seen them tipped by many as serious contenders. However, standing in their way is the last team to hand them a competitive defeat.

That honour belongs to Angola, who claimed a convincing 3-0 victory over South Africa in the COSAFA Cup final in June.

While that result will fuel belief, the Palancas Negras have struggled to maintain momentum since, winning just twice in their last seven outings.

Angola are still chasing a first-ever AFCON semi-final appearance, having twice reached the quarter-finals.

Their record in tournament openers offers limited encouragement too, with only one win from nine AFCON group-stage curtain-raisers (D6, L2).

That said, Patrice Beaumelle’s men showed impressive defensive discipline during qualification, going unbeaten (W4, D2) and conceding just two goals — a record bettered by only two teams.
