AFCON 2025: ‘I will be over the moon’ - Super Eagles defender aiming for second clean sheet against Algeria
Nigeria's defensive record has been a point of concern, having conceded four goals in their first four matches of the tournament.
The team's only clean sheet in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations came in their Round of 16 victory over Mozambique.
They conceded in the group stage matches against Tanzania, Uganda, and Tunisia, failing to keep their opponents off the scoresheet.
Ajayi speaks on getting a clean sheet
Speaking to the media in Morocco, the West Bromwich Albion defender emphasised that his primary focus is on defensive duties rather than personal goal-scoring glory.
"My job is to keep the ball out of the net," Ajayi stated. "So, if we keep a clean sheet tomorrow, I will be over the moon."
Despite the defensive challenges, the Super Eagles have been in formidable attacking form, scoring twelve goals and winning all four of their matches so far.
Ajayi expressed his desire for the team to maintain their winning momentum against the Desert Warriors and secure a favourable result.
"We have had an excellent start to the tournament, and we aim to keep it up," he added.
As the quarterfinals approach, coach Eric Chelle will be looking for a strong performance to guide his team into the semifinals.
Meanwhile, Calvin Bassey has revealed that the team is working on their defensive structure and he has discussed with Ajayi about a clean sheet.
