Samuel Chukwueze’s light-hearted warning about the unforgiving nature of Nigerian fans resurfaced in dramatic fashion as the Super Eagles ended their AFCON 2025 journey with a bronze medal.

What began as humour inside the camp ultimately mirrored the winger’s own painful experience on the tournament’s biggest stage.

“If you do anyhow, they will kill you” — a joke with real meaning

Smiling but serious, the Fulham winger warned the Blackburn Rovers full-back about the wrath of Nigeria’s online fanbase.

“If you do anyhow, they will kill you on that place,” Chukwueze joked, before adding, “Better do assist or score or otilo o [it’s finished for you].”

He even explained survival tactics, saying, “If you don’t give assist, just cross the ball so that even if Victor [Osimhen] touches it, they will say no problem you crossed. That’s when you are safe.”

While humorous, the message reflected a harsh truth: Nigerian players operate under intense scrutiny, with social media criticism often swift and brutal.

Penalty miss turns spotlight on Chukwueze

Ironically, Chukwueze’s words came back to haunt him during Nigeria’s ill-fated semi-final clash with Morocco.

After a tense 0–0 draw across 120 minutes, the Super Eagles crashed out 4–2 on penalties, with Chukwueze missing his spot-kick. The reaction was immediate and unforgiving, as fans accused him of being too casual in a decisive moment.

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle came to his defence, insisting, “Samuel Chukwueze is the best penalty taker of the team, he never misses in training… maybe the crowd. I think if we play the penalties in Uyo, Abuja or Lagos, we win for sure.”

Yet the impact lingered. In the third-place playoff against Egypt, which also went to penalties, Chukwueze was notably absent from the list of takers as Nigeria won 4–2 to claim bronze.

In the end, the Super Eagles finished on the podium, but Chukwueze’s earlier warning proved prophetic, just not for the player he intended.
