Former Nigerian international Mutiu Adepoju has called on the Super Eagles to remain focused and maintain their winning rhythm as they prepare for a tough Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 quarter-final showdown against Algeria.
Nigeria booked their place in the last eight after thrashing Mozambique 4–0 in the round of 16.
What Adepoju said
Speaking in an interview with Footy Africa, Adepoju who was part of Nigeria’s legendary 1994 AFCON-winning squad praised the team’s dominant display against Mozambique, describing it as a major statement of intent.
“Yeah, it was a very good win, and I would rather say it was a statement win,” Adepoju said.
“They really played very well and got the goals, which is what has been expected throughout this tournament.”
Adepoju expressed satisfaction with the Super Eagles’ overall performance, pointing to their control and efficiency in front of goal.
“We have been improving game by game, and I just hope that the improvement will continue in the quarter-finals,” he said.
“It was tremendous, the play was good. Yes, it was total dominance from the Super Eagles over the Mozambicans.”
The North Africans needed extra time to edge past DR Congo in their round-of-16 encounter, a result that underlined their resilience and tournament experience.
“Hopefully, we will be able to replicate the same performance against Algeria, who will be another difficult side,” Adepoju concluded.
As the Super Eagles chase a fourth AFCON title, Saturday’s quarter-final clash against Algeria promises to be a true test of their championship credentials.
