As the Atlas Lions edge closer to a possible showdown with Nigeria in the semi-finals, the Real Madrid star has already broken multiple long-standing AFCON records.

Diaz becomes Morocco’s most consistent AFCON scorer

The 26-year-old forward has set a new national benchmark by becoming the first Moroccan player to score in five consecutive AFCON matches in a single edition.

Diaz has found the net in every game so far, from the group stage through to the quarter-finals, where he also scored in the 2-0 win over Cameroon, a level of consistency never before achieved by a Moroccan player at the tournament.

His scoring streak has been central to Morocco’s progress, with the Atlas Lions entering the competition as favourites following their historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup.

Diaz’s ability to deliver in every round has proved beyond doubt his importance to Walid Regragui’s side as they chase their first AFCON title since the 1970s.

Historic feats place Diaz among AFCON greats

Beyond national records, Diaz has also etched his name into AFCON history. He is the first player since Ghana legend Osei Kofi in 1968 to score in all of his team’s first five matches at a single AFCON tournament, highlighting his lethal form in front of goal.

In addition, Diaz has become only the second Moroccan player ever to score in three consecutive AFCON matches, a feat last achieved by iconic forward Ahmed Faras across the 1972 and 1976 editions.

That record had stood alone for 49 years before Diaz matched it in Morocco’s ongoing campaign.

With Morocco now safely through to the semi-finals after defeating Cameroon, Diaz’s record-breaking run could yet continue, potentially against the Super Eagles, who take on Algeria in their quarterfinal tie, as the Atlas Lions dream of continental glory.
