A sad day for Aribo and Onuachu as Southampton offically relegates from the Premier League
Southampton needed a win against Fulham to keep their Premier League hopes alive but could not defeat the Cottagers as they relegate from the Premier League. Nigerian forward Onuachu was in action for Southampton while midfielder Joe Aribo was left on the bench.
Two second-half strikes from Carlos Vinicius and Alexander Mitrovic were enough to sink the Saints and confirm their relegation.
As it happened
The Southampton attack was led by Nigerian forward Paul Onuachu with the support of Theo Walcott while midfielder Joe Aribo was left on the bench. Fulham on the other hand was led by Carlos Vinicius and supported by Willan in attack.
Southampton's effort to get a goal in the first half failed as they could not take advantage of their limited chances. Both teams could not get a goal and created few chances as the referee called the first half to a halt.
The second half started with much intensity from Fulham which paid off as their first attack led to the opening goal. 48 minutes into the second half, Harrison Reed displayed great vision and sent a pass to Carlos Vinicius, who showed brilliant composure inside the box to bury the ball from close range in the back of the net.
Fulham buried the hatchet in the 72nd minute when Aleksandar Mitrovic burst into the box to get on the end of a whipped-in cross from Harry Wilson and scored magnificently from close range into the bottom right corner.
At the sound of the final whistle, Southampton’s relegation from the EPL was confirmed and Nigerian Onuachu and Aribo joins the Saints as they play in the Championship next season.
