A crazy goalkeeper - Olympic gold medalist backs Nwabali’s goalkeeping style as a perfect fit for Super Eagles
Olympic gold-medal-winning goalkeeper Joseph Dosu has thrown his weight behind Super Eagles shot-stopper Stanley Nwabali, insisting that his sometimes overzealous approach is exactly what national team head coach Eric Chelle wants in a goalkeeper.
The debate over Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper has continued to divide fans and pundits, with Nwabali’s audacious style drawing both admiration and criticism. While some supporters are uneasy about his risk-taking tendencies, Dosu believes the Chippa United keeper’s fearless nature is a major asset rather than a flaw.
What Dosu said
Speaking on ThePlayzone podcast, Dosu made it clear that Chelle’s preferences should outweigh public opinion.
He said, “The most important thing is, what did Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle say about him? He mentioned he likes a goalkeeper who is really crazy.
“Whatever we say is not important. He wants goalkeepers who communicate with their defenders and intimidate the opposition.”
Dosu also revealed that he had identified Nwabali’s potential long before his rise to international prominence.
“The first time I saw his picture was when my older brother, who was the goalkeeper coach for Go Round, showed it to me. This player is tall and very big, and he’s a good goalkeeper for the future,” he recalled.
“I mentioned that if he remains focused, he will definitely play as the goalkeeper for the national team,” he added.
